OPPO R5 | World’s thinnest phone ever!

Today we will go back a bit and review the OPPO R5, which still carries title of the world’s thinnest smartphone ever. Since today’s smartphones are now aimed at high-end performance rather than design and comfort, we missed old elegant smartphones a bit. To give an example from today, OPPO Find X6 Pro device weighs 218gr and 9.1mm thickness. Although it is a high-end device, it is very thick and heavy. And OPPO R5 is a very elegant and stylish device with a weight of 155gr and 4.9mm thickness.

OPPO R5 Review

Today, we go back almost 10 years and review the OPPO R5 smartphone. Device still maintains title of being the thinnest phone ever in the world today. OPPO R5 introduced in December 2014, device has mid-range device specifications. Device has a 5.2″ FHD (1080×1920) 60Hz AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Device also powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) (28nm) with 2GB – 16GB RAM/Storage variant. OPPO R5 has a single camera setup with 13MP f/2.0 camera and 5MP selfie camera. Device also equipped with a 2000mAh Li-Po battery with 20W wired fast charging support.

Dimensions and Design

When OPPO R5 was introduced, it was a device that attracted attention with its thin design and budget-friendly specifications. OPPO R5 is looks very simple, device has 148.9 x 74.5 x 4.9mm body dimensions and 155gr weight. Highlight of OPPO R5 is its slim 4.9mm thickness. This makes the thinnest device in world as well as offering an aesthetically elegant appearance. A metal frame and glass back panel add to the phone’s ruggedness and luxurious feel. However, this ultra-thin design comes with some usage restrictions. For example, OPPO R5 doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack, although this is considered normal today, it could be a serious drawback for 2014.

OPPO R5 has a very simple and stylish design compared to today’s devices. It has a 5.2″ display size, which is pretty small compared to today’s smartphones that will reach almost 7″ display size. We believe that these elegant phones should be back, it’s quite tiring to use today’s rough and heavy phones.

Performance

OPPO R5 is a mid-range device for its time in terms of performance, of course it is mediocre today. Device with Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) (28 nm) chipset is powered by 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 and 4×1.0 GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and Adreno 405 is present in GPU side. OPPO R5 comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage with eMMC 4.5 technology. AnTuTu benchmark score hovered around 30,000, which was mediocre today, an ideal mid-range device performance back then.

If you want to use OPPO R5 today, it can only do basic entry-level things. Let alone playing games, you can barely surf even on social media. Still, in 2014, it was a device that offered quite ideal and good performance.

Display

OPPO R5 has a high quality screen for its price. However, since screen-to-body ratio is very low (67.5%) compared to today, it might look a little ugly. However, display quality is pretty good. Device has a 5.2″ FHD (1080×1920) 60Hz AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Having a high-resolution AMOLED display on a device in this class is a good advantage.

OPPO R5 is a device that can still manage today in terms of display, screen resolution and quality are acceptable. Moreover, being 5.2″ makes it elegant and compact.

Camera

OPPO R5 also performs ideally in terms of camera for its price. But of course, it’s far behind compared to today. Device comes with a single camera, has a 13MP f/2.0 Sony Exmor IMX214 camera sensor. Device, which is very successful in daytime shots, is unfortunately mediocre in night shots. And 5MP front camera is unfortunately quite inadequate.

OPPO R5 is not very ambitious in terms of camera, but it still had an ideal photo quality for the conditions at that time.

Battery, Connectivity, Software and More

If we take a look at the other specifications of device, a 2000mAh battery and 20W VOOC fast charging support available. 2000mAh is a very low battery capacity, but 20W fast charging support is also quite fast. They’re a bit inconsistent, but it will only take a few minutes to charge the device, but so will the discharge rate of the battery. Device comes with Android 4.4 based ColorOS 2, device also has Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 4, GPS and microUSB 2.0 support.

Today, we went back to the past with OPPO R5, and we saw how stylish and useful the old devices were in terms of design. Today’s devices urgently need to return to these designs.
